Rotterdam 16 July 2019 – On 16 July, Cobana in Rotterdam was officially completed and ready to welcome its new tenants. Developer and investor IC Netherlands festively celebrated this happy moment with construction company Heijmans, alderman Bas Kurvers and other stakeholders on Cobana’s roof terrace. Several speakers took the floor, including alderman Bas Kurvers: ‘We want young professionals to bond with the city and stay here. A project like this contributes a lot to that’.

Heijmans was commissioned by IC Netherlands to build the apartment complex with 375 apartments on a new part of Rotterdam’s city; Katendrecht. In recent years, this former sailors’ quarter has become one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. Inspired by well-known industrial port buildings in the area, Rijnboutt has designed a tough residential building for young professionals. After starting in July 2016, a design process of about one year (preliminary design to working drawings) and a construction time of about two years, the building stands as if it has always been there. ‘It’s incredibly clever what all parties involved managed to pull off in 2 years. We are very proud of that!’ says Peter van der Gugten (director Heijmans N.V.).
Cobana contains various types of studios and apartments ranging from 37m2 to 70m2. There is also a unique concept within Cobana; so-called ‘Friends Apartments’. Here, the kitchen and living room are shared between two or three friends, but each has their own bedroom with bathroom. Tenants can use various communal areas such as a library, roof terrace and cooking studio. Cobana is a co-living concept for young professionals and currently operates three similar complexes in Amsterdam. Moreno Monsanto, director of concepts: ‘We at IC are extremely proud to add this wonderful project to our portfolio and operate our first location in Rotterdam.’
